Wrapping up our 2021-23 RAP

With the support of Reconciliation Australia, Sureway developed and delivered an Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) from April 2021 – April 2023. The intention of Sureway’s 2021-23 RAP is to acknowledge and demonstrate our respect for Australia’s First Peoples, by building respectful relationships and creating equal and equitable opportunities

As our business moves into the process of creating our 2023-2025 reconciliation commitments and targets, we thought it timely to share some of our key learnings and successes from the past two years.

We extend our thanks to our RAP Working Group members, our broader staff, and members of the communities for their input, support and guidance along our journey.

In 2021-2023, Sureway committed to enacting its Company Policy ? Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employment Strategy to work towards our goal of 5% Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employment across the Sureway workforce. We are pleased to report that as at March 2023, 8.29% of Sureway’s total workforce identified as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander. As an organisation, we look forward to continuing this trajectory as we move into the second half of 2023 and beyond.

Paralympic champion helping businesses embrace inclusivity

Retired Paralympic sprinter turned elite sporting coach, business owner, father, and motivational speaker Scott Reardon continues to channel his passion for helping others run a fair race after renewing his partnership with Sureway for 2023/24.

Hailing from Temora, Reardon has proudly partnered with Sureway since 2018 to inspire more businesses to actively embrace the employment of individuals with disabilities.

Reardon attributes much of his own success to the support he received during his youth, which allowed him to pursue a world-class career in athletics. His journey has led him to three Paralympic Games, including a spectacular gold medal victory in Rio in 2016.

Reflecting on his past, Reardon shared, “I lost my lower leg in a farming accident when I was 12. Shortly after that, I returned to Temora, and the support network around me helped me get back on my feet and embrace life again.”

“I’ve been incredibly fortunate to forge a career in elite sports, which has granted me financial security, exciting challenges, and a daily sense of purpose.”

Reardon is passionate about helping other people with a disability have the same opportunities to pursue a rewarding career — and wants businesses to be aware of the benefits of employing them.

Driven by a deep passion to offer individuals with disabilities the same opportunities he was granted, Reardon aims to educate businesses on the advantages of employing them. He asserts, “Hiring a person with a disability can bring immense value to a business. Research demonstrates that these employees tend to exhibit greater reliability, productivity, and loyalty. So, not only is it the right thing to do, but the business case is also remarkably strong.”

Reardon also highlights that studies indicate hiring a person with a disability doesn’t incur additional costs compared to employing someone without a disability. In fact, the benefits extend to increased workplace morale and an enhanced reputation among customers, potentially leading to greater economic prospects for businesses.

Businesses partnering with Sureway receive customised support and may even qualify for wage subsidies for their employees.

“Sureway ensures that the placement aligns with both the employee and employer’s needs and provides continuous support to help individuals thrive in their jobs,” Reardon emphasises.

“For jobseekers, sometimes all it takes is for someone to give you a chance, to have faith in your abilities, and it can open up a world of confidence and opportunities.”

While Reardon has retired from competitive racing, he remains dedicated to using his influential platform to advocate for positive change and continue his mission of creating a more inclusive and equitable future.

What is Workforce Australia? https://staging.sureway.com.au/what-is-workforce-australia/ Tue, 21 Jun 2022 06:11:07 +0000 https://www.sureway.com.au/?p=9106 The post What is Workforce Australia? appeared first on Sureway.

What is Workforce Australia?

Workforce Australia is the Australian Government’s new employment service that will commence on July 1, 2022—comprising all employment services by the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations, meaning that the Workforce Australia program you’re likely already familiar with will be replaced with Workforce Australia.

The service will allow job seekers to manage their job search through a new online portal. Otherwise, if you’re a job seeker who requires more support to find suitable employment, you will be referred to a Workforce Australia provider for additional assistance who is located closest to you.

What does this mean for Sureway?

From July 1, Sureway Employment & Training will no longer be delivering the Workforce Australia program. Instead, Sureway will be a Workforce Australia provider and support job seekers and eligible unemployed people through the following Workforce Australia Services:

  • Employment Services
  • Transition to Work
  • Career Transition Assistance

As a job seeker, what service will be most suitable for me?

All services will help job seekers find, apply for, start and keep a job. However, the assistance that they each offer is slightly different. The service that will be most suitable for you will depend on your individual goals, needs and preference, considering things like your skillset, work experience, age and location.

Does this affect Disability Employment Services?

Workforce Australia will be a service delivered by the Department of Education, Skills and Employment. Disability Employment Services is a service delivered by the Department of Social Services. Because different departments provide these services, Workforce Australia will not impact Disability Employment Services.

Sureway’s Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan

Sureway were pleased to launch our Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) for 2021-2023.

Our Vision for Reconciliation

Our vision for reconciliation is for all Australians to come together to achieve a socially inclusive community through acknowledgement and respect of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Sureway is committed to acknowledging and demonstrating our respect for Australia’s First Peoples by building respectful relationships and creating equal opportunities. We aim to develop understanding and build awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures throughout our organisation.

Artwork by Luke Penrith

Our RAP artwork was designed by First Nations artist Luke Penrith and is titled ‘Journey Along the Waterways’.

Aboriginal peoples’ value to water is sacred, deep and necessary for survival. It is protected by lore which provides a system of sustainable management ensuring healthy peoples. Each person is on a journey, to learn their culture and heritage but also gain knowledge and experience in modern Australia. Rivers are traditionally important routes, providing food, water and shelter. Gaining knowledge is like a river (Bila) always moving forward. It could be rough at times but can also be calm and gentle. Never underestimate the undercurrent, snags and logs. The orange (U) symbols are the staff of Sureway supporting each client to gain educational knowledge, build their self-esteem and build capacity and capability in their chosen fields of work. The colourful circles represent a ripple effect of that journey. Be proud of self, family, the wider Aboriginal community and a sense of Reconciliation.

A modern contemporary artist, Luke is a proud Aboriginal man of the Wiradjuri people with cultural and family ties to Yuin and Wotjoboluk people and the Gumbaynggirr Nation. His art reflects what he can see, hear, smell and touch and is strongly influenced by lore, culture and heritage.

Sureway’s RAP can be viewed on our website at https://staging.sureway.com.au/about-sureway/sureways-reconciliation-action-plan/

A gift of thanks for Shepparton

Past client Bradley Duka recently donated a piece of his artwork to Sureway Shepparton to thank them for helping him on his journey to employment and beyond.

At the start of his job-search journey, Bradley was success in gaining 9-days worth of work at the Campbell Canteen. His local Consultant was assisting him with some tools for the trade when they were contacted by another team member regarding several vacancies for Chefs across the Goulburn Valley area.

Many of these roles were a perfect fit for Bradley, and upon further discussion it identified that Bradley has Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Island heritage though for many years he was not culturally identified.

The team were able to narrow down the opportunities to a specific role with long-standing partner, Jarman Group for Chef (identified position). An interview was arranged for the very next day and he was successful in gaining the role.

Bradley has now been employed with Jarman Group for over 6 months. He has recently been put in charge of a new restaurant and will be working on developing some localised indigenous based menus to show case to local and international tourists.

On presenting the Shepparton team with this custom artwork, Bradley spoke about how he had spent so long not knowing about his family heritage and culture, and over the last four years he has rediscovered his heritage as a proud Yorta Yorta Man.

The artwork symbolises his time being lost and without connection to Country and Bradley’s journey in discovering who he is and where he belongs.

His parting word to the team when he donated the picture were “You guys have changed my life forever”.

The artwork hangs proudly in our Shepparton office and is cherished by the team. It draws in many great comments and discussions.

Valma opens doors with new skills

Meet Valma. Her story is one of resilience in its truest form.

Valma hails from the remote town of Peterborough, in Mid North SA. In recent years, she lost her home and belongings in a devastating house fire and suffered a near-fatal head injury.

Despite it all, Valma wears the biggest smile and is always looking at the positives in life.

In 2020, Valma participated in Sureway’s Career Transition Assistance (CTA) program – a program is designed to help mature-age job seekers build their confidence and skills to become more competitive in their local labour market by teaching digital literacy, transferable skills, resume writing and more.

Valma was new to computers at the start of the course, having never even sent an email. She also relied upon friends and family to help her navigate the digital world.

Due to the impacts of COVID-19, the CTA course was being delivered 100% online which was at first nerve wracking for Valma, but now – how the tides have turned!

Since joining the CTA program in late August Valma has:

  • Sent and received emails, and cc’d in recipients
  • Attached files to emails to send to her trainer, as well as downloading and saving attachments that are sent to her
  • Connected to zoom meetings with ease, she participates in two zooms per week with her Facilitator Jess
  • Created a budget in MS Excel, using autosum functions
  • Used MS Word to type and format her new resume
  • She has even designed a flyer for her annual Christmas Cave all on her own with her new found skills!

Congratulations to Valma for her persistence, hard work and dedication to changing her life despite the challenges of remote learning!
