Courtney from Phillip ACT graduates Hospitality Course

Workforce Australia Phillip ACT Participant Courtney made us all proud by graduating the On the Sparks Hospitality Program this month. Sureway were invited to attend her graduation ceremony at CIT Reid ACT where we were able to hear all that Courtney had learned and achieved over the course of the program.

She has persevered and shown great resilience to complete seven units in four weeks with her Sparks Hospitality Job Trainer, in partnership with ClubsACT and Canberra Institute of Technology.

Courtney and her Employment Consultant have worked closely together since the start of 2023 to overcome her barriers and to improve her self-esteem and motivation.  A huge improvement has been seen in Courtney, who has now found the confidence to step out into the workforce.

Starting the course shy and reserved, Courtney has not only now graduated but has made heaps of new friends.

Courtney’s Employment Consultant has expressed how proud she is “I couldn’t be prouder of Courtney, and I cannot wait to see what the future holds.”

Sureway wishes Courtney all the best with her future endeavours.

Career Transition Assistance (CTA) helps Pauline with her New Career Path

Pauline previously worked in Hospitality at a local club. Looking for a career change, she got referred to Career Transition Assistance (CTA) in Echuca Victoria.

By day six Pauline had a job with the help from the CTA program. To celebrate her efforts and her new career path, CTA Facilitator, Tamara Balding sat down with Pauline to ask her some questions on her sucess.

How has Sureway/CTA helped with your employment journey?

With the support of CTA, Sureway and my CTA Facilitator Bernadette Quarrie (the fabulous trainer), I felt supported and believed in myself to achieve my full potential.

In the course you are taught to brighten your horizons and increase your self-belief. This was the little push I needed to follow my new career path journey.

What was the best part of the CTA course?

I can’t pinpoint the best part of the course as there was lots to learn and each person will take something away.

In the course, participants are encouraged to bounce ideas off one another. I really enjoyed the resume formatting. It highlighted that I did have transferable skills from my Hospitality experience. These skills will help me in Aged Care. I was also able to use my transferable skills to self-promote myself and to approach employers.

Would you recommend the CTA course to others, why?

Yes, yes, yes!

You will learn heaps and get lots out of the course. You gain what you want out of the course.

Put yourself out there. You are never too old to learn something new or try a different career.

“CTA took me out of my comfort zone. I got a different career and I am looking forward to a workplace where no day will be the same. I couldn’t be happier!”

Study leads to career in health and care services for Aggie from Christies Beach

Agnes (Aggie) became unemployed after a series of personal life events lead her to withdraw from the workforce. Throughout this, she developed a desire to give back through health and care services after seeing the wonderful palliative care team supporting her family.

Looking to upskill to re-enter employment, she was referred by her Disability Employment Services (DES) Consultant to attain her Certificate III in Individual Support with Sureway Skills Training (SST), due to the Trainer Support available.

Aggie dove straight into online study with Trainer Support on hand as she needed. Her confidence noticeably grew as she progressed through course subjects. This was exhibited through her increased engagement, self-motivation and development of successful study habits.

She cruised through her theory assessments. With great support and partnering from SST and her Employment Consultants, a Work Experience placement was sourced with Infin8 Care.

Aggie promptly completed further online learning modules as part of the host employer’s induction.

“At first it was daunting”, she said; however, Aggie took ownership, completing her required 120 hours’ work experience to have her Observation Record signed off.

SST Training Facilitator Darren said “Aggie is a model SST student, DES client, and Work Experience participant. It was very rewarding to see her offered casual work with her host employer, Infin8 Care”.

“Aggie tells me that she has enjoyed learning on the job from others”.

When asked how she would describe her new career, Aggie explained “It is absolutely fantastic. I love it! Everyone’s really good, really helpful. There is never a day thinking ‘Oh I have to go to work’, instead it’s ‘let’s go to work’.”

Aggie has recently been invited to apply for permanent shifts.

Congratulations to Aggie for pursuing a career that she is passionate about, where she delivers care to other families with empathy and compassion daily.

A group of 11 young job seekers have recently graduated from Youth Jobs PaTH Employability Skills Training (EST), with the trainer Peter Mullen saying that it was the most employment-focused group he has had in all his years of training.

Mr Mullen, Trainer & Assessor for ARC Group delivered the 12-day course in Traralgon VIC during August in which participants developed skills in advanced job searching techniques, career development, industry awareness, and more.

Youth Jobs PaTH EST is an Australian Government initiative designed to help young job seekers become job ready through pre-employment training. Mr Mullen said that delivering training to unemployed youth cohorts can often present a great variety of skill levels, however the group came open and ready to learn.

“In almost 11 years of delivering training to job seekers I have not had a complete group like this that was as employment focused,”

“The learners where very pro-active in what they expected and worked so very well towards getting the best out of our 12 days together.” Mr Mullen said.

Participants in this course completed a number of group tasks to build their communication skills and confidence, including the cup maze (as shown in the photos) where teams of two must navigate each other backwards and forwards using only hand signals. Job seekers were also treated to a visit from a real employer to assist them to develop an understanding of employer expectations.

“A lot of sharing was done by them when we did group activities, and they responded exceedingly well to an employer brief – one job seeker was asked to leave a resume!”

Participants also took to some mystery shopping as an exercise to learn more about the retail environment.

Mr Mullen said that engagement among the group was high, and it was excellent to see that the participants not only walked away with new skills but also new friendships.

“It is always great to see when diverse groups build strong trust and friendships during training and that was the case with this group of learners.”

“It became common for them to hang out after training for coffee.”

The group decided to have a ‘Onsie’ Day with everyone donating a gold coin to the Salvos.

Mr Mullen said that he was particularly impressed with the drive of one job seeker who called him recently to go through some interview strategies for an imminent employment interview.

“It was really pleasing to take a call from him later that day to share how he had gotten on, and again later that day when he was offered and accepted employment.”

“Without doubt the best group of learners with an excellent focus of their employment.”

“As a trainer it was a real privilege to be allowed to help these guys on their employment journey.”

8 out of the 11 participants have now found either full-time or part-time employment.
